
Alleycats: The Legendary Malaysian Pop Band

Alleycats is a Malaysian pop band that was formed in 1978 by brothers Loganathan and David Arumugam. The band is known for their evergreen hits such as Senandung Semalam, Layang Layang Terputus Talinya, Hingga Akhir Nanti, and many more. Alleycats has released over 30 albums and won numerous awards, including the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) for Best Pop Album in 1999 and 2000.
The band’s name was inspired by their early days of performing at nightclubs and pubs, where they were often referred to as “the alley cats”. The band’s music is influenced by various genres, such as rock, soul, funk, disco, and ballads. The band’s lyrics often reflect their social and political views, as well as their personal experiences and emotions. Alleycats is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential Malaysian pop bands of all time.
Alleycats is still active today, with Loganathan Arumugam as the lead vocalist and keyboardist, David Arumugam as the guitarist and backup vocalist, Shunmugam Arumugam as the drummer, Tan Chin Hock as the bassist, and Mohd Fauzi Marzuki as the saxophonist. The band continues to perform live shows and release new albums, such as Terima Kasih in 2018 and Alleycats 40 Tahun in 2019. Alleycats has also collaborated with other artists, such as Zainal Abidin, Amy Search, Jamal Abdillah, and Siti Nurhaliza.
The History of Alleycats
Alleycats was founded by Loganathan and David Arumugam, who were born in Penang, Malaysia, to a family of musicians. Their father was a drummer and their mother was a singer. They grew up listening to various kinds of music, such as Indian classical, Malay traditional, Chinese opera, and Western pop. They learned to play various instruments, such as guitar, keyboard, drums, and saxophone.
In 1978, the brothers moved to Kuala Lumpur to pursue their musical career. They formed Alleycats with three other musicians: Shunmugam Arumugam (their cousin) on drums, Tan Chin Hock on bass, and Mohd Fauzi Marzuki on saxophone. They started performing at nightclubs and pubs, where they gained popularity for their energetic and versatile performances. They also participated in various talent contests and festivals, such as the Battle of the Bands and the Song Festival.
In 1981, Alleycats released their debut album Drama Kehidupan, which featured their first hit single Seribu Bintang. The album was well-received by the public and critics, and established Alleycats as one of the leading pop bands in Malaysia. The band continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, such as Senandung Semalam, Layang Layang Terputus Talinya, Hingga Akhir Nanti, Terima Kasih, and 40 Tahun. Some of their most popular songs include Suara Kekasih, Kerana, Nota Terakhir, Sekeping Hati Yang Luka, Berita Dari Rantau, and Senyumlah Kuala Lumpur.
