Who is Lord Dattatreya?

Lord Dattatreya is a Hindu deity who is also regarded as an aspect of the Divine Trinity or Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He is considered as a paradigmatic Sannyasi (monk) and one of the lords of yoga, venerated as a Hindu god. He is also revered as the Adi-Guru or the First Teacher of the Nath sect of followers, who practice Tantra and Yoga.

Lord Dattatreya was born to sage Atri and his wife Anasuya, who were granted a boon by the Trimurti that they would be born in their household. He had three heads, representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, but later assumed a single-headed form at his mother’s request. He left his home at a very young age to wander naked in search of the Absolute One. He attained enlightenment in Ganagapura, Karnataka, where his original footprints are still worshipped.

Lord Dattatreya is believed to be the author of the Tripura Rahasya, a treatise on Advaita Vedanta, which he gave to Parashurama. He is also associated with several Upanishads, such as the Dattatreya Upanishad, the Avadhuta Gita and the Jivanmukta Gita. He taught the principles of non-duality, detachment and self-realization through various forms and methods, such as a child, a madman and even a demon.

Lord Dattatreya is worshipped by many Hindus from different sects and traditions, such as Vaishnavism, Shaivism and Shaktism. He is especially popular in Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. His birthday is celebrated as Dattatreya Jayanti on the full moon day of the Margashirsha month of the Hindu calendar. He is depicted with four dogs and a cow, symbolizing the four Vedas and Mother Earth respectively. He also holds various attributes of the Trimurti, such as a conch, a discus, a lotus, a trident, a water pot and a drum.
