What is Monster Hunter Stories About?
Monster Hunter Stories is a game that tells a different story from the main Monster Hunter series, where you play as a Rider instead of a Hunter. Riders are people who form bonds with monsters, or Monsties, and use them as their companions and allies. Riders live in harmony with nature and respect the balance of the ecosystem, unlike Hunters who hunt monsters for their resources and protection.
The game’s story begins in a forest near the village of Riders, where three young friendsâthe hero, Lilia, and Chevalâfind a shining egg. They perform a playful imitation of the Rite of Kinship, a ritual that Riders use to bond with their Monsties, and are surprised when it actually works. The egg hatches into a baby Rathalos, a flying wyvern also known as “the King of the Skies”. They name him Ratha and take him back to the village.
However, their peaceful life is shattered when a monster infected by “the Black Blight”, a mysterious disease that makes monsters go berserk, attacks the village. The friends manage to drive it away, but not before it destroys the town and leaves scars in their hearts. A year later, the hero receives a Kinship Stone from the Village Chief and officially becomes a Rider. Lilia and Cheval both leave the village, each on their own path. The hero, accompanied by a cheerful felyne named Navirou, embarks on a new adventure into the world of hunters. Along the way, they will meet new friends and foes, discover the secrets of the Black Blight, and uncover their destiny as the legendary Rider of Ratha.
How to Play Monster Hunter Stories?
Monster Hunter Stories is a game that combines elements of exploration, combat, and customization. You can explore different environments and dungeons to find monster dens, where you can steal eggs and hatch new Monsties. You can also collect items and materials from monsters and plants to craft weapons, armor, and items. You can customize your Monsties’ appearance and abilities by using gene splicing items called “Rite of Channeling”. You can also change your own appearance by visiting barber shops and changing your clothes.
The combat system in Monster Hunter Stories is turn-based, unlike the real-time action system in the main series. During battles, you can control both your rider and your Monstie. You can choose from three types of attacks: Power, Speed, and Technical. Each type has an advantage over another: Power beats Technical, Technical beats Speed, and Speed beats Power. You can also use items and skills to heal or buff yourself or your Monstie.
As you fight alongside your Monstie, you will fill up a Kinship Gauge that allows you to perform special moves called Kinship Skills. These skills vary depending on your Monstie’s species and element. Some Monsties can also perform special actions in battle, such as flying or digging. You can also ride your Monstie during battles to boost your stats and access more powerful Kinship Skills.
Monster Hunter Stories also features multiplayer modes where you can play with other players online or locally. You can cooperate with up to three other players to take on quests or explore dungeons together. You can also compete with other players in PvP battles where you can test your skills and strategies against each other.
