Plot Summary

The film begins in 2017, when Jodi Kantor receives a tip that actress Rose McGowan was sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein. She contacts McGowan, who initially declines to comment, but later calls her back and describes her traumatic encounter with Weinstein when she was 23. Kantor also speaks with actresses Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow, who reveal their own experiences with Weinstein, but ask not to be named in the article for fear of retaliation.

Kantor recruits Megan Twohey to help with the investigation, and they track down former employees, lawyers, and victims of Weinstein who have signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that prevent them from speaking out. They also face pressure from Weinstein’s lawyers, publicists, and allies who try to discredit them and stop the publication of their article. Despite the challenges, they manage to obtain enough evidence and testimonies to publish their bombshell report on October 5, 2017, which sparks a global outcry and a wave of accusations against Weinstein and other powerful men accused of sexual harassment and assault.
